Ukraine Simply Cannot Lose – The Winning “Thousand Cuts” Strategy for Kiev

DEFENSE

The difference in war aims between Ukraine and Russia is clear: Zelensky fights for Ukraine’s survival, while Putin seeks an outright victory, given the high military and resource losses of Russia. This disparity creates an opportunity for Ukraine to wear down Russia with a defensive strategy.

Instead of major offensives, Ukraine could use the “thousand cuts” tactic — slowly wearing down Russian forces with defensive strikes, ambushes, and drones.  This strategy has historically been effective, as seen in the Vietnam and Afghanistan wars, where weaker armies won using asymmetric methods.

For this tactic to be successful, Ukraine needs continued Western support in intelligence, defensive equipment, and mines. Air defense systems and the strategic use of drones help Ukraine hold its defense lines, making Russian offensives increasingly costly and dangerous.

Ukraine should avoid large-scale attacks, as the costs of an offensive are too high. Staying on the defensive preserves troops and resources. In addition, the use of drones and mines increases the effectiveness of the Ukrainian side, making Russian attacks extremely risky.

If successful, this strategy could lead to the exhaustion of Russian forces, a military collapse or even a coup against Putin. With continued support, Ukraine could wear down Russia until it becomes incapable of sustaining a war.
